By the description of the upcoming chipset, the Exynos 9820 will be a powerhouse and will compete directly with ARM’s Cortex-A76 chip. Leaks have already suggested Samsung is building the 9820 on 7nm FinFET architecture. We also know, rather obviously, that the company will use the CPU to power the next wave of Samsung flagships. So, you can expect to see it on the Galaxy Note 9 at the end of the year, and probably the Galaxy S 10 next year. New information also points to the Exynos 9820 featuring Mongoose M4, which could point to the chip besting the Cortex-A76 in terms of performance. A new leak hints at Samsung’s chip beating AMD’s in both performance efficiency.

— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) June 9, 2018 Considering ARM says the A76 can achieve 3.30GHz, it is entirely possible the upcoming Exynos will clock higher. We will be interested to see how Samsung manages the considerable heat generated by such a powerful processor.

Cortex-A76

Until we hear information on Apple’s A12, ARM’s Cortex-A76 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 are Samsung’s biggest rivals. ARM says its new silicon brings full laptop quality performance, but maintains mobile efficiency like improved battery life. The company says the A76 offers a 40 percent improvement in battery and a 4x jump in machine learning performance. ARM claims the performance is in line with leading Intel laptop chips like the Core i5 and Core i7. “Cortex-A76 represents the best fit for the laptop space because the performance uplifts allow exceptional delivery of the most important productivity apps such as the Microsoft Office suite, providing a much faster, smoother user experience. Cortex-A76 based laptops are expected to deliver twice the performance on the current Arm based generation.”
