Slack says it reached 12.5 million concurrent users this week. This was a record for the company, which competes with Microsoft Teams in the workplace chat market. The user record for simultaneous active users shows the ongoing demand amid the coronavirus outbreak. Throughout the month Slack has been observing consistent user growth. The Verge reports the company had 10 million concurrent users on March 10. Six days later on March 16, the number increased to 10.5 million. As the COVID-19 situation worsens and more people are told to stay home, the number reached 12.5 million yesterday. Considering the ongoing pandemic, it seems reasonable to assume the record will be broken again soon.
Microsoft Teams Demand
However, in terms of user demand, Microsoft Teams remains top of the workplace chat market. For example, Microsoft Teams saw its daily active userbase double to 44 million within a week. Last Monday the service went down under the strain. It was only in November that Microsoft said the service had reached 20 million daily active users. This week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company is well positioned to come out of the COVID-19 outbreak strong. “We have a great balance sheet, we are a very diverse business, we have a mix of annuity, non-annuity, that is also stronger than even the last time we even went into the financial crisis. I feel confident we’ll come out of this, frankly, pretty strong.”
