To receive the new firmware, users must be running Windows 10 April 2018 Update (1803) or newer. In its release notes, Microsoft says the updates are to make improvements on overall device performance. For reference, this release brings the devices up to version 5.2.139.0. Unfortunately, it seems this firmware update does not address the battery degradation issue that has impacted Surface devices recently. Last month, Surface Pro 5 and Surface Pro 6 owners reported their devices are having battery issues. It seems the problem is expanding, with more Surface devices now suffering the issue. Users running the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Laptop 2 are facing similar problems. Users say when affected devices are shutdown at night, the battery loses around 25% of its power. When a device is shutdown, it should not be losing around a quarter of battery. It seems firmware updates have caused the problem, so a new firmware update is likely on the way.
Surface Pro 7
Microsoft is likely to launch its Surface Pro 7 next month at an event in New York City. Last week, the specifications of the upcoming device leaked, pointing to a big performance boost. Microsoft’s new generation device will come with LTE built in at launch. Usually, the company debuts LTE versions of its hardware after the launch of the Wi-Fi version. Some variants of the Surface Pro 7 will have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx processor. Intel versions will be available as usual, this time packing 10TH Generation Core CPUs.
